This is an opening that gets much narrower as it goes inside the trap. A fish swims through the wide part to reach bait. Once inside, the fish cannot find its way back out through the tiny end. Some modern traps use a thick steel wire frame shaped like a heart.

Chicken wire is stretched around this frame to create a mesh. The mesh wraps around and then tapers into the inside of the trap. This design makes it very easy for fish to enter but hard to leave.

In South Africa, some stone walls used as traps are 3,000 years old. Even older systems exist at a place called Budj Bim. There, indigenous people built canals over 2 km long to catch eels.

These canals are part of a system that is at least 6,600 years old. This makes it older than the famous Pyramids of Giza. In Australia, the Brewarrina fish traps on the Barwon River also caught huge numbers of fish as water levels changed.

In Japan, heavy earthenware pots are used to catch octopuses. These octopuses enter the pot to find shelter and protection. Lobster pots often have two parts called a "kitchen" and a "parlour." The lobster enters the kitchen for bait and then moves into the parlour where it is caught.
