Fish fin

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Fish have many fins on their bodies. These fins help them move in the water. Fins help fish swim and turn. They also help fish stay up or go down.

Most fish have two types of fins. Some fins are paired. This means they come in sets of two. They sit on both sides of the body. These paired fins help the fish turn. They also help the fish stay steady. Other fins are single. These fins sit in the middle of the body.

There are many kinds of single fins. The dorsal fin sits on the back. It helps the fish stay upright. The anal fin is on the bottom. Some fish have a tail fin. This is called a caudal fin. The tail fin helps the fish push through water. It helps them move forward. Some fins have rays. Rays are thin parts that hold the fin open. These rays act like the ribs of an umbrella. They keep the fin strong and stiff.
