It is made of fried fish and fried potato slices called chips. Many people call it the national dish of the United Kingdom. This meal began in England during the 1800s.

Long ago, Jewish immigrants brought the tradition of fried fish to the UK. They used flour and oil to cook it. Later, new trains helped move fresh fish to big cities. This made the meal easy for many people to buy.

In the 1860s, the first fish and chip shops appeared. One shop was opened by Joseph Malin in London. Another was opened by John Lees in Lancashire.

During the two World Wars, the British government made sure people had fish and chips. It was one of the few foods people could always get.

Today, people love this food in many countries. It is a very popular takeaway in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. In Ireland, people sometimes call it "one and one." People often eat it near the sea or at home.
