The Finnish Lakeland is a huge area in central and eastern Finland.

It is a large landscape made of many hills and forests. To the south, the area is bounded by the Salpausselkä Ridges. To the north, it sits next to Upland Finland. The lake district also reaches into Russia to the east. It stretches about 370 kilometers from south to north. It is also about 350 kilometers from east to west.

This land was shaped by huge glaciers a long time ago. These glaciers moved across the country about 10,000 years ago. As they moved, they scoured and gouged the surface. They left behind things called drumlins and long, winding eskers. These are parts of the land left by the ice. The lakes also formed from weathering and erosion in the bedrock. This work happened before and during the Quaternary ice ages.

Lakes cover about 25% of this entire region.

There are at least 55,000 lakes that are at least 200 meters wide. Some people call this area Lampi-Suomi, which means Pond Finland. This is because the number of lakes is so high. Near Lake Inari, there can be 1,000 lakes for every 100 square kilometers. The coastlines of these lakes are often very twisty and complex.

Lake Saimaa is the largest lake in this district.

It is the second-largest lake in Finland. This lake provides drinking water for the city of Helsinki.

Many people live in this area, but the population is low. Most of the land is covered in thick forests. Many cities sit right on the lakeshores or peninsulas. These include places like Kuopio, Savonlinna, and Varkaus. In the past, the lakes were the main way to travel. Today, people still enjoy the water and build summer cottages on islands.
