They take a script, which is a written story. Then, they turn that story into a real film. Directors lead the actors and the film crew. They help choose the cast for the parts. They also help choose how the film looks.

This job is very hard and busy. Directors must stay calm on a fast set. They must also work within a budget. A budget is the amount of money for the film. They work with a producer. Producers handle the business side of the movie.

Directors also work in post-production. This is the stage after filming ends. They work with an editor to pick the best scenes. Some top directors have the "final cut." This means they have the last say on the film.

Many people learn this craft in film school. They learn to use shot lists and storyboards. A storyboard is a drawing of the scenes. Some directors start as actors or writers.
