Originally broadcast on BBC Two, it consists of two series with six episodes each. The show is set in a dysfunctional hotel located in the seaside town of Torquay, Devon. It explores the chaotic lives of hotel staff as they struggle with demanding guests. The series is celebrated for its intricate plots and high-quality writing. It remains a vital part of British comedy history today.

The show's humor relies on complex mechanisms of misunderstanding and social tension.

The plots are often farcical, using coincidences and accidental meetings to create chaos. Much of the comedy comes from Basil Fawlty's attempts to "raise the tone" of his establishment. He wants to attract high-class guests, but his own behavior often drives people away. This creates a cycle of frustration and social failure. The episodes use "comedy cross-talk" and fast pacing to keep the energy high.

The central characters represent different types of social and personality conflicts. Basil Fawlty is the snobbish, short-fused owner who desperately wants to climb the social ladder. His wife, Sybil, is a bossy and acerbic woman who can easily intimidate him.

The staff includes Polly Sherman, a sensible chambermaid, and Manuel, a Spanish waiter. Manuel is often the target of Basil's physical and verbal outbursts. Because Manuel's English is limited, his mistakes cause frequent misunderstandings. These character dynamics drive the tension in every episode.

The series was inspired by real-life experiences at the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay.

In May 1970, the Monty Python comedy group stayed at this hotel. John Cleese was fascinated by the owner, Donald Sinclair, whom he described as extremely rude. Sinclair once threw a briefcase out of a window because he feared it contained a bomb. Cleese and Booth even stayed longer at the hotel to research Sinclair's behavior. This real-world eccentricity provided the foundation for the character of Basil Fawlty.

Production of the show required an extraordinary level of detail and precision.

Cleese and Booth were perfectionists who often wrote up to ten drafts for a single episode. This process could take as long as four months for one script. While a standard BBC comedy script was about 65 pages, these scripts reached 140 pages. The production also used twice as many camera cuts as average shows. They used 400 cuts compared to the usual 200 to improve the pace. Editors spent 20 to 25 hours on each show to tighten the timing.

The show achieved massive critical and commercial success over many years.

It won the British Academy Television Award for Best Scripted Comedy in 1976 and 1980. John Cleese also won a British Academy award for Best Entertainment Performance in 1980. The British Film Institute ranked it first in a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes in 2000. In 2001, a Channel 4 poll ranked Basil Fawlty as the second greatest TV character ever. Experts later named it the greatest British sitcom of all time.

Fawlty Towers connects to the broader history of British media and culture. It is described by the BBC as a jewel in their comedy crown. The show's influence is seen in how it set standards for sitcom writing and editing. Even the locations have a legacy, as the building used for exterior shots was later a nightclub named "Basil's." The legacy of the cast also lives on, such as the retirement home Sachs Lodge named for Andrew Sachs. The series continues to be re-broadcast for new generations of viewers.
