It tells the funny and wild stories of a hotel in Torquay. The hotel is run by a very stressed owner named Basil Fawlty. Basil is a snobby man who wants to be high class. He often gets angry with his guests and his own staff. His wife, Sybil, is very bossy and can easily scare him.

The hotel staff includes Polly, a sensible maid, and Manuel. Manuel is a waiter from Spain who struggles with English. His many mistakes lead to silly and confusing situations for everyone. The show captures the chaos of trying to run a hotel.

Making the show required a lot of hard work and care.

John Cleese and Connie Booth wanted every script to be perfect. Some episodes took four months to finish. They sometimes wrote as many as ten different drafts for one episode. The scripts were much longer than most other comedy shows. A normal script might have 65 pages, but these had 140 pages. They also used many more camera cuts to keep the pace fast. The team spent about 25 hours editing each single show. This helped them make every joke and movement feel just right.

The ideas for the show came from a real place. In May 1970, the Monty Python comedy group stayed at the Gleneagles Hotel.

John Cleese was fascinated by the hotel's owner, Donald Sinclair. Cleese thought Sinclair was a very rude man. Sinclair once even threw a briefcase out of a window. He did this because he thought it might contain a bomb. These real-life moments inspired the characters in the series. Cleese and Booth even stayed at the hotel longer to study the owner. This research helped them create the funny world of the show.

Fawlty Towers was first shown on BBC Two in 1975. There were two series made, with six episodes in each one. The show was very successful and won many important awards. In 1976 and 1980, it won awards for Best Scripted Comedy. John Cleese also won an award for his acting in 1980. Even though some critics were unsure at first, people loved it. The show was even ranked as the top British TV program in 2000. It remains a very famous part of British television history.

Today, people still talk about the characters and the jokes. Basil Fawlty was ranked as one of the greatest TV characters ever. The show is often re-broadcast so new people can see it. Experts even named it the greatest British sitcom of all time. Many people can still remember the famous lines from the show. It is a special part of the BBC's history of comedy. Even many years later, the show still makes people laugh. It shows how much care goes into making great stories.
