It is not a professional magazine. Fans make them for other fans. They share things they love about music or stories. Most people who make them do not get paid. They might share them for free. Some fans swap books with each other. This helps them find new friends.

In the past, making a fanzine was hard work. Fans used manual typewriters to write. They used machines like the mimeograph to make copies.

These machines used ink and stencils. Some fans even used a hectograph. This was a messy way to make colorful copies.

Fanzines help people build a community. Science fiction fans used them to talk to each other. Later, fans of shows like Star Trek made media fanzines.
