Family Feud

Family Feud is a popular American television game show.

It was created by Mark Goodson to test how well people know common opinions. Two competing families attempt to identify the most popular responses to survey questions. These questions are based on answers provided by a group of 100 people. The goal is to accumulate points to win cash prizes. The show is a study of social trends and collective thinking.

The gameplay follows a specific sequence of events. Each round begins with a face-off between two opposing contestants. The host reads a survey question, such as "Name something you expect to see on the streets at Christmas time." One player must buzz in to provide an answer. If the answer is the most popular one on the board, that family wins control. If not, the opponent can try to provide a higher-valued answer. If neither player finds an answer on the board, the remaining teammates take turns guessing.

Once a family has control, they try to reveal all the hidden answers. Each family member provides one answer in a specific sequence. If a player gives an incorrect answer or fails to respond within three seconds, the family earns a strike. After three strikes are recorded, the opposing family has one chance to steal the points. To steal, the opposing team's captain must guess one of the remaining answers. If they succeed, they win the points for that round. Otherwise, the points are awarded to the original family.

The show has undergone several distinct eras and changes. The original version ran from 1976 to 1985 on ABC with host Richard Dawson.

A second version aired on CBS from 1988 to 1995, hosted by Ray Combs and later by Dawson again. The third version began in 1999 and has featured several different hosts. These include Louie Anderson, Richard Karn, and John O'Hurley.

Currently, Steve Harvey hosts the program, a role he has held since 2010. Harvey has achieved the longest tenure of any host in the show's history.

Scoring and prize structures have evolved significantly over the decades. In the early years, families earned $1 for every point scored. The standard goal to win a game was often 200 points, but it was later changed to 400 points. Most modern versions aim for a 300-point total. If no family reaches 300 points after four rounds, they play a sudden death face-off. In this round, only the top answer is shown. The first person to buzz in with that answer wins the game.

The most exciting part of the show is the Fast Money bonus round. The winning family selects two members to participate. One contestant stays on stage with the host while the other stays backstage to prevent cheating. The first player answers five rapid-fire questions within a set time limit. This limit was originally 15 seconds but was extended to 20 seconds in 1994. The second player then answers the same five questions with a five-second time extension. If the combined score of both players reaches 200 points, the family wins a large cash prize. This prize has historically ranged from $5,000 to $20,000.

Family Feud has expanded far beyond the television screen. It has become a global phenomenon with adaptations in over 50 international markets. People can also experience the game through board games, video games, and interactive films. The show's success is reflected in its high Nielsen ratings. Under Steve Harvey's leadership, the program became one of the top three most popular syndicated shows in the United States. This demonstrates the lasting appeal of seeing how ordinary people respond to the world around them.
