Faith healing is a practice where people use prayer or special gestures to seek help from a divine power.

Many people believe these actions can lead to physical or spiritual healing. Some followers use a method called the laying on of hands.

This involves placing hands on a person while praying for them. While some people find comfort in these rituals, most scientists and philosophers do not see them as scientific. They often classify faith healing as pseudoscience because there is no empirical evidence to prove it works.

In many traditions, the process of faith healing follows specific patterns. It might involve a simple prayer or a visit to a sacred shrine. Some people believe in a supreme being and use that faith to find strength. Other groups, known as spiritual healers, focus on divine energy rather than a god. The goal is often to bring about a change in a person's health through faith. Some people believe this can cure many things like blindness or deafness. However, the American Cancer Society notes that scientific evidence does not support these claims. Using faith instead of medical care for serious illnesses can lead to very sad outcomes.

Christianity has a long history with these ideas found in the Bible. Many Christians look to the New Testament to learn about these practices. Stories describe Jesus performing miracles, such as healing a blind man or a paralyzed man.

The apostle Paul also believed that healing was a special gift from the Holy Spirit. In the book of Acts, Saint Peter is even described as healing a disabled man. These stories have shaped how many people view the connection between faith and health today. Some thinkers believe these miracles were meant to show that Jesus was sent by God.

Different groups within these faiths have their own specific rules and views. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes two ways that healing can happen. One way is through natural means, which means using modern medicine and science. The other way is through divine grace, which involves prayer or anointing with oil. Catholics may also pray to saints for help, such as Saint Jude. At the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France, many people claim to have experienced miracles. Since 1858, medical experts have looked at 67 miracles and 7,000 other cures there. They use a group called the Lourdes Medical Bureau to check these cases.

Other groups, like Pentecostal and Charismatic Evangelical churches, have their own traditions. They often hold special prayer meetings or worship services for healing. In the early 1900s, the Pentecostal movement grew in America and included many who believed in divine healing. By the 1930s, some faith healers had large followings all over the world. These beliefs often link back to the idea that miracles are still possible today. While scientists focus on what can be proven, many people continue to find meaning in these ancient practices. It is a topic where science and deep personal belief often meet.
