Factorial

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

In mathematics, a factorial is a specific way of multiplying a series of numbers. For any non-negative integer, the factorial is the product of all positive integers less than or equal to that number. This operation is vital because it helps us understand the complexity of arrangements. It allows mathematicians to solve problems involving sequences, probability, and the behavior of large numbers.

The mechanism of a factorial relies on a repetitive multiplication process. To find the factorial of a number, you multiply it by every whole number below it down to one. For example, the factorial of four is four times three times two times one, which equals 24. You can also use a recurrence relation to find these values. This means you can find a factorial by taking the previous factorial and multiplying it by the current number. For instance, the factorial of five is simply the factorial of four multiplied by five.

There are specific rules for special cases, such as the factorial of zero. By mathematical convention, the factorial of zero is defined as one. This is known as an empty product, which is a product of no numbers at all. This convention is helpful because it makes many mathematical identities work correctly. It also allows the recurrence relation to function with only one base case.

Factorials have been discovered independently by many different cultures throughout history. In Indian mathematics, the Anuyogadvāra-sūtra from the Jain literature described these concepts between 300 BCE and 400 CE. Around 1150, the Hindu scholar Bhāskara II used factorials to solve problems regarding the hands of a god. Jewish mystics in the Talmudic book Sefer Yetzirah, written between 200 and 500 CE, used factorials to study word combinations. In the 17th century, Fabian Stedman applied these ideas to the musical art of change ringing with bells.

Many famous mathematicians have expanded our understanding of how factorials behave. In 1676, Isaac Newton used factorials in the power series for the exponential function. James Stirling developed Stirling's approximation in 1729 to estimate very large factorials. This approximation shows that factorials grow even faster than exponential growth. In 1808, Christian Kramp introduced the standard notation we use today. That same year, Adrien-Marie Legendre created a formula to describe the exponents of prime numbers within a factorial's factorization.

Factorials are essential in the field of combinatorics for counting permutations. A permutation is a distinct sequence of objects, and factorials tell us how many ways we can arrange them. They are also used to calculate binomial coefficients, which count combinations or subsets. In algebra, they appear in the binomial theorem and in the coefficients of various polynomials. They even appear in calculus through Faà di Bruno's formula for higher derivatives.

Beyond counting, factorials connect to complex mathematical functions and advanced science. Daniel Bernoulli and Leonhard Euler interpolated the factorial into a continuous function called the gamma function. This function works for complex numbers, except at negative integers. In number theory, factorials help prove that there are infinitely many prime numbers. They are also used in computer science to analyze how quickly a computer can sort a list of items. Finally, they appear in quantum and statistical physics to study the permutations of particles.
