Factorial

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Imagine you have three different colored blocks. How many ways can you line them up? You could put red, then blue, then green. Or you could put blue, then red, then green. Math helps us find every possible way. We call this a factorial.

A factorial is a special math rule. To find it, you multiply a number by every whole number below it. For example, the factorial of four is four times three times two times one. This equals 24. Factorials grow very fast! Even small numbers become very big very quickly.

Many cultures found this idea on their own. Long ago, Indian scholars used it. They studied how to order sets of items. Jewish scholars also used it. They looked at how many words they could make from letters.

Today, factorials are very useful. They help us in computer science. They also help in probability, which is the study of chance. Scientists use them to understand how things can be arranged.
