Extraterrestrial intelligence

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Do smart beings live in space? We do not know yet. Scientists call these beings extraterrestrial intelligence. This means life that is not from Earth. Some people think many worlds have life. The universe is very big. Many scientists think life must exist elsewhere.

One scientist named Enrico Fermi had a big question. He thought we should see signs of aliens. But we have seen no signs yet. This is called the Fermi paradox. It is a puzzle about why we are alone. We use a math tool called the Drake equation. It helps us guess how many alien groups live in our galaxy. A study in 2020 gave a guess. It said there might be 36 alien groups in the Milky Way.

We look for technosignatures. These are signs of machines or technology. We also try to send messages. This is called Active SETI. We sent the Arecibo message in 1974. We also sent the Voyager Golden Records.

Space is very far away. Contact might be very hard. We are still searching the stars.
