Exploration

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Exploration is the act of looking for new things. Most animals do this too. For example, social insects search for food. Humans explore many different places.

People have explored land for a long time. Long ago, humans moved out of Africa. Some people crossed a land bridge to reach the Americas. Later, people traded and shared ideas. In the 1500s, Abraham Ortelius made a modern atlas. An atlas is a book of maps. His work showed all the continents.

We also explore under the water. We use small ships called submersibles. One famous one is named Alvin.

We have only mapped a small part of the ocean. Much of it is still a mystery.

Finally, we explore outer space. We use big rockets to go there. Some people fly in ships. Other times, we send robots. The Curiosity rover is a robot on Mars.
