Evelyn has been profoundly deaf since she was a young child. She started to lose her hearing when she was eight years old. This does not stop her from being a great musician. Instead, she has learned to hear in a different way. Her teacher, Ron Forbes, showed her how to use her body. She can feel the vibrations of the music. For example, she feels high drums in her upper body. She feels low drums from her waist down.

To help her feel these vibrations, Evelyn often performs barefoot. This lets the music move through her feet and into her body. She has a massive collection of over 3,500 percussion instruments. These instruments come from all over the world. She even plays the Great Highland Bagpipes. She even has her own special tartan called "The Rhythms of Evelyn Glennie."
