Its name means "bee-eating." However, it mostly eats the larvae of wasps and hornets. This bird has many tools to help it hunt. It has scale-like feathers on its head. These act like armor to stop stings.

It also has long claws for digging. It uses these to find nests on the forest floor.

Some people think its feathers have a chemical that keeps wasps away.

This bird travels very long distances. It is a migrant, which means it moves to stay in good weather. In the summer, it lives in Europe. In the winter, it flies to tropical Africa. To find its way, it uses a sense of magnetic orientation. This helps it feel the Earth's magnetic pull. It also remembers big things like rivers and mountains. The bird avoids flying over large oceans. It prefers to cross narrow parts of the sea.

This bird is quite easy to spot in flight. It has long wings that stay straight while it soars.
