society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ethnology is a special way of studying human groups. It is a field that looks at many different peoples.

Researchers use it to compare different cultures. They want to see how groups are alike or different. This is not the same as ethnography. Ethnography focuses on studying just one group through direct contact. Ethnology takes those findings and looks for big patterns. It helps us understand the relationships between various nations.

This study works by looking at many pieces of information. Scholars look at the origins of different groups. They study languages and the customs people follow. They also look at the institutions that groups build.

Some experts try to find things that are true for everyone. These are called cultural invariants. One example is the incest taboo. This is a rule about family relationships. Other goals include studying how cultures change over time.

We can trace the history of this field back many years. A man named Adam Franz Kollár used the term ethnology. He lived from 1718 to 1783. He wrote about it in a book published in Vienna in 1783.

Kollár lived in the Kingdom of Hungary. This land had many different ethnic groups. He saw many different languages being spoken there. This made him very interested in cultural diversity. His work helped define the science of nations.

History shows that people have different ways of thinking about others. In the 15th century, explorers went to America. This led to new ideas about the Western world. Some people used the term "the Other" for new groups. They sometimes used unfair labels like "savages."

Later, Claude Lévi-Strauss changed how we think. He was a very important part of the French school of ethnology. This school became very significant in the early 1950s. Other famous names include Paul Rivet and Marcel Griaule.

Today, ethnology is part of a larger group of studies. It is closely linked to anthropology. In the United States, people often call it cultural anthropology. In Great Britain, they often call it social anthropology.

The lines between these names are becoming blurry. This field helps us see how humans are connected. It teaches us about the history of all people. It helps us move past old, narrow ways of seeing the world.
