Ethane is a natural chemical compound. It is a gas that has no color and no smell. You can find it in natural gas and in oil.

It is very useful for making other things. Most people use it to make ethylene. This is a key part of making many products. Ethane is also a greenhouse gas. It stays in our air for only a few months. This is much shorter than the lifetime of methane.

To get ethane, workers use a special way it works. They take natural gas and make it very cold. This is called cryogenic cooling. One way to do this is with a turboexpander. This tool makes the gas expand through a turbine. This action drops the temperature to about -100 degrees Celsius. At this cold temperature, the ethane turns into a liquid. This makes it easy to separate from the methane gas.

People have studied ethane for a long time. Michael Faraday first made it in 1834. He used a process called electrolysis. He did not know it was ethane at first. He thought it was methane instead. Later, Hermann Kolbe and Edward Frankland also made it. They also made a mistake about what it was. In 1864, Carl Schorlemmer corrected these errors. He showed that the product was actually ethane.

Ethane is found in many amazing places. It is a tiny part of Earth's air. It is also in the air of all four giant planets.

Scientists found ethane on the moon Titan. On Titan, it rains down and forms dark lakes. There are large lakes called Ligeia Mare and Kraken Mare. In 1996, people found it in Comet Hyakutake. In 2006, NASA scientists found ethane on Pluto. It might have been part of the original solar nebula.

In a science lab, ethane has a very special job. Scientists use liquid ethane to freeze tiny samples. They use it for something called cryo-electron microscopy. This helps them look at very small things. The liquid ethane freezes water very quickly. If water freezes too slowly, it makes ice crystals. These crystals can break soft parts of a sample. Using very cold ethane keeps the samples safe for looking at.
