Most people use ethane to make ethylene. Ethylene is a chemical used for many things. To get ethane, workers use cold temperatures. They turn the gas into a liquid. This helps them separate it from other gases.

Ethane is also found in space. It is in the air of giant planets. It is on the moon Titan. On Titan, ethane can turn into liquid. It forms dark lakes on the moon. These lakes cover much of the north pole.

Scientists use special tools to find ethane. They found it on Pluto too. It was even found in a comet. Some think ethane was part of the solar nebula. This is the cloud that formed our sun and planets.

In a lab, scientists use liquid ethane to freeze samples. This helps them see tiny parts of cells. It freezes water very fast. This keeps the parts from breaking.
