Ethan Frome is a famous book written by Edith Wharton in 1911.

It tells a very sad story about love and hard choices. The story takes place in a fictional town called Starkfield, Massachusetts. This town is known for its very cold and harsh winters. The book explores how a person's surroundings can change their life. It is a story that many people find very powerful. Readers often feel the weight of the characters' difficult decisions.

The story follows a man named Ethan Frome. He lives on a farm with his wife, Zeena. Zeena is often sick and needs a lot of care. Ethan also lives with Mattie, who is Zeena's cousin. Ethan and Mattie fall in love with each other. They want to run away to be together. However, Ethan does not have enough money to leave. He also feels too much guilt about leaving Zeena alone.

One day, Ethan and Mattie go sledding on a hill. They decide to steer their sled into a large elm tree. They do this because they want to stay together forever. The crash is a terrible accident that changes everything. Ethan ends up with a permanent limp. Mattie becomes paralyzed from a spinal injury. They stay in the same house, but they are not happy. They live a life of sadness and discontent.

Edith Wharton based this story on a real event. She heard about a sledding accident in Lenox, Massachusetts. This accident happened in 1904 on a place called Courthouse Hill. Five people were involved in that real crash. A girl named Emily Hazel Crosby died in that accident. Another girl named Kate Spencer survived with injuries. Wharton used this idea to show how life can change in an instant.

Many people have turned this book into other art. There is a famous movie from 1993 starring Liam Neeson. A dancer named Cathy Marston also made a ballet. This ballet is called Snowblind and was for the San Francisco Ballet. The book is still studied by people today. Some say it is a very bleak story. Others say it shows the real truth about hard lives. It remains a very important piece of American writing.
