She was born on January 24, 1862, in New York City. Her family was very wealthy and famous in society. Because of this, she saw how rich people lived. She used these observations to write realistic stories. She wanted to show the true lives and morals of her time.

Her writing helped people understand the Gilded Age.

Edith loved stories from the time she was very small.

When she was four, she would "make up" stories. She would walk with an open book to look like she was reading. She was actually making up the tales as she went. At age 15, she published her first work. It was a translation of a German poem. Her family did not want her name in print back then. They thought writing was not a proper job for a lady. So, she used a friend's father's name instead.

As she grew up, Edith became a famous author.
