It tells a deep story about a man named Jude Fawley. Jude is a working-class stonemason who dreams of becoming a great scholar. He lives in a village in southern England, part of a place Hardy calls Wessex. Jude spends his spare time teaching himself Latin and Classical Greek. He hopes to one day study at a university in a city called Christminster. This city is based on the real place of Oxford. The book explores big ideas like class, education, and religion.

The story follows many difficult steps for Jude and his cousin, Sue Bridehead.

Jude first marries a girl named Arabella Donn after a trick. This marriage fails, and Arabella eventually moves to Australia. Later, Jude moves to Christminster to study and meets Sue. Sue is a free-spirited woman who dislikes the idea of marriage. Their lives become very complicated when Sue marries a teacher named Mr. Phillotson. The characters face many struggles with social rules and their own feelings. They move from town to town while looking for work and a home.

Thomas Hardy began writing notes for this story around 1887.

He may have been inspired by the death of a friend named Horace Moule. The story first appeared in a magazine in December 1894. It was called "The Simpletons" or "Hearts Insurgent" in the magazine. The book was first published in November 1895. The title page of the book says 1896. Hardy wrote this as his 14th and very last novel. He used parts of his own life to help write the story.

Many real facts from Hardy's life appear in the book.

Like Jude, Hardy worked as a stonemason and an architect. He also studied the classics while working a full-time job. He could not afford to go to Oxford or Cambridge for a degree. The book also shows how Hardy's wife, Emma, changed over time. She went from being free-spirited to being very religious. This caused tension in their own marriage. Some critics in the past were very angry about the book. A bishop named Walsham How even burned a copy of it.

Even though it is an old book, people still talk about it today.

It is ranked as one of the 100 greatest British novels by the BBC. It is also on a list of the 100 best English novels by The Guardian. Many people have turned the story into new things to watch. There was a TV show made in 1971. A movie called "Jude" came out in 1996. A play called "Jude" was even performed in London in 2019. These versions help new readers discover Hardy's famous work.
