Etching is a special way to make art prints on paper.

It is one of the most important ways artists have shared their work for a long time. Artists use a metal plate to hold a design. They then use a machine called a press to move ink from the plate to paper. This allows them to make many copies of the same beautiful picture.

Some artists even combine etching with other methods to add more detail. This makes the art feel very special and unique.

To start, an artist covers a metal plate with a waxy layer called a ground.

This wax protects the metal from being eaten away by acid. The artist uses a sharp tool called an etching needle to scratch a drawing into the wax. This reveals the bare metal underneath. Sometimes they use a tool called an échoppe to make lines look thicker or thinner.

Next, the plate is dipped into a bath of acid called a mordant. The word mordant comes from a French word that means "biting." The acid bites into the metal only where the wax was scratched away.

People have been using etching for thousands of years.

Long ago, the Harappan civilization in the Indus Valley etched white patterns onto carnelian beads. These beads were very precious and were traded with places like Egypt. Later, in Europe, craftsmen used etching to decorate metal items like armor and cups. A man named Daniel Hopfer is believed to have invented etching for printmaking. He lived in Germany and was a master at decorating armor.

Many famous artists have used this skill to create masterpieces.

Albrecht Dürer made the oldest known dated etching in 1515. Later, Jacques Callot improved the technique by using a harder varnish. This helped artists make much more detailed work without ruining their plates. In the 17th century, the great artist Rembrandt became very famous for his etchings. Other artists like Francisco Goya used a method called aquatint to add different tones.

These masters showed how much detail could be captured with acid and metal.

Today, etching is still used in many different ways.

Some artists use soft ground to capture the texture of fabric or fur. Others use a method called relief etching, which was used by William Blake around 1788.

Even modern technology uses a version of this idea. In science, a process called microfabrication etching helps make tiny parts like circuit boards. From ancient beads to modern computer parts, the idea of "biting" into a surface remains very important.
