She became a global icon by blending athletic skill with cinematic entertainment. Williams is most famous for pioneering a genre known as "aquamusicals." These films featured elaborate, choreographed performances involving synchronized swimming and diving. Her ability to perform complex aquatic movements under studio lights transformed how audiences viewed water sports. She transitioned from a record-breaking athlete to a major Hollywood star during the 1940s.

Williams' journey began with rigorous training in competitive swimming. As a teenager, she joined the Los Angeles Athletic Club swim team. She learned various technical strokes, including the butterfly, from male lifeguards. By age 16, she had secured three U.S. national championships in breaststroke and freestyle. In 1939, her medley team established a record for the 300-yard relay. She also became the national AAU champion in the 100-meter freestyle. Her winning time for that event was 1 minute 9.0 seconds.

Her transition to the stage occurred through Billy Rose's Aquacade. This large-scale aquatic show was part of the Golden Gate International Exposition. While performing there, she swam alongside Olympic gold medalist Johnny Weissmuller. It was during this period that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) scouts discovered her talent. MGM signed her to a contract in 1941 to compete with figure-skating star Sonja Henie. To prepare for her new career, Williams underwent nine months of intensive training. She studied acting, singing, dancing, and diction to ensure a successful transition from athlete to actress.

During the 1940s, Williams starred in a series of highly successful films. Her early roles included appearances in Andy Hardy films and with actor Van Johnson. Johnson became a frequent co-star, appearing with her in five different films. One notable production was "Bathing Beauty," which served as her first Technicolor musical. In "Thrill of a Romance," she played a character on a honeymoon.

The film was the eighth highest-grossing movie of 1945. Between 1945 and 1949, at least one of her films ranked among the twenty highest-grossing films released each year.

Williams also explored diverse roles that expanded her public image. In 1952, she performed her only biographical role in "Million Dollar Mermaid." She portrayed the Australian swimming star Annette Kellerman. This performance was so impactful that "Million Dollar Mermaid" became her professional nickname at MGM. She also took on more dramatic or unusual roles, such as in "The Hoodlum Saint" or the film "Fiesta." In "Fiesta," she played Maria, a character who disguised herself as her bullfighting brother.

Her business interests included a metal products plant and a manufacturer of bathing suits. She also owned a service station and various properties. Notably, she operated a successful restaurant chain known as "Trails." She even leveraged her fame to launch a line of swimming pools and instructional swimming videos for children.

Her influence extended into the realm of sports broadcasting and public service. During World War II, she conducted hospital tours to entertain soldiers. These tours included mock screen tests where she performed romantic scenes for the troops. Later in life, she returned to her aquatic roots in a professional capacity. She served as a commentator for synchronized swimming during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Her life represented a unique intersection of professional athletics, Hollywood stardom, and commercial entrepreneurship.
