Erysipelas

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Erysipelas is a common skin infection. It happens when tiny germs enter the body. These germs often come through a small cut or a bug bite.

Streptococcus pyogenes
Streptococcus pyogenes

A germ called Streptococcus pyogenes usually causes it. This germ makes a bright-red rash on the skin. The rash has a sharp, raised edge. It may feel warm, firm, or sore to the touch. Most cases happen on the legs or the face.

People may feel sick very quickly. They might have a fever or a headache. Some people feel chills or may vomit. This can happen within 48 hours of the infection.

Doctors can find this by looking at the red rash. They may use antibiotics to treat it. Antibiotics are medicines that fight germs. Most people take them for five days.

Sometimes, the infection can come back. About one in three people get it again within three years. It is important to keep cuts clean to stay safe. This helps stop the germs from getting inside.
