Error

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An error is when an action, thought, or judgment is not correct. The word comes from a Latin term that means "to wander."

Errors can lead to failure or cause things to act differently than intended. In social settings, people sometimes make errors called gaffes. A gaffe might be saying something true but inappropriate. This can cause embarrassment or friction between people. Some thinkers, like Sigmund Freud and Gilles Deleuze, have studied these social slips.

In books, a printing error can change a whole story. One old Bible in Totnes, UK, printed the name "Judas" instead of "Jesus." A slip of paper was used to fix that mistake.

In science and math, error has a very specific meaning. In statistics, an error is the difference between a calculated value and the true value. Engineers also look at the gap between how a system should work and how it actually works. For example, a home thermostat uses error to stay on track. It measures the difference between the setting and the air temperature.

In math, people use numerical analysis to handle these gaps. Computers sometimes cannot represent every number exactly. This creates an approximation error. Scientists work hard to make these errors as small as possible.

History shows us that errors in engineering can be very serious. One major example is the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. This happened in the city of Chernobyl in present-day Ukraine. It caused a nuclear meltdown and is studied by researchers today. In the world of intelligence, the CIA looks at factual inaccuracies. They call these intelligence errors when they come from poor or missing data. They call it an intelligence failure when the whole system is surprised. These reports eventually become available to the public through the Freedom of Information Act.

Errors also show up in the things we collect. In philately, which is stamp collecting, an error is a printing mistake. A stamp might have the wrong color or be missing its edges. These must be unintentional to be real errors. Collectors also look for errors in coins, which is called numismatics. The U.S. Bureau of the Mint tries to prevent these. Some errors include extra metal on a coin or double stamping.

These rare items can be very special to collectors.

Even living things deal with errors every day. In biology, an error happens when information is copied imperfectly. This is called a mutation in DNA. Some mutations can be harmful to a living thing. However, some mutations are neutral or even helpful. These helpful changes can drive evolution through natural selection. In medicine, an error is a preventable problem in patient care. This might be a wrong diagnosis or an incorrect treatment. Doctors and engineers both work to find ways to make systems more error-tolerant.
