It was the first long movie made by director David Lynch. The film uses a surrealist style, which means it feels like a dream. It tells the story of a man named Henry Spencer. He lives in a dark, industrial city filled with factories. Henry must learn to care for a very strange, deformed baby.

This movie is known as a cult film. This means a dedicated group of fans loves it very much. It is so important that the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in 2004.

Making the film was a very long and difficult job. It took many years of principal photography to finish the project. Lynch often ran out of money while he was working. To keep the movie going, friends like Jack Fisk and Sissy Spacek gave donations. Even Jack Nance's wife, Catherine Coulson, donated her money from being a waitress. Lynch himself delivered newspapers to help pay for the film. The production was so slow that one year passed between two shots of a door.

David Lynch began making this film while studying at the American Film Institute. He lived in disused stables on the school campus to make his sets. He also used a place called Greystone Mansion for some scenes. The story was inspired by many different things in his life. He had daydreams about a man's head being taken to a pencil factory. He also read stories like "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka. Some people think the film was inspired by his fears of being a father. His daughter was born with clubbed feet that needed many surgeries.

Technical skill is a huge part of why people admire the movie. Lynch and sound designer Alan Splet spent one whole year on the audio. They even built a soundproof studio to work in. They made sounds by layering up to fifteen different noises at once. For one scene, they put a microphone inside a plastic bottle in a bathtub. They recorded the sound of air being blown through the bottle. The music also includes organ music by Fats Waller. There is also a song called "In Heaven" by Peter Ivers.

Eraserhead is a cornerstone of independent cinema today. It showed the world a new way to use sound and strange images. The strange baby in the film is a famous part of the movie. Some people think the prop, nicknamed "Spike," was made using a rabbit. The baby had moving parts for its eyes, mouth, and neck. Many people see the film's dark city as a reflection of Philadelphia. Lynch lived there for five years in a very tough neighborhood. This experience helped him create the gritty world seen on screen.
