Equilibrium constant

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sometimes, a mix of chemicals reaches a calm state. This is called chemical equilibrium.

In this state, the mix does not seem to change. The forward and backward parts of a reaction happen at the same rate. This means the mix stays the same for a long time.

Scientists use a special number to study this state. This number is the equilibrium constant. It tells us how much of each thing is in the mix. The value of this constant does not change even if you start with different amounts. However, some things can change the number. Temperature, the liquid used, and ionic strength can all change it.

There are different kinds of these constants. Some are called stability constants or binding constants. These help us understand how things stick together. This science is very important for life. It helps your blood carry oxygen. It also helps your body keep its acid levels steady.
