People can compete alone or in groups. Some groups are called squads. A squad has six people. They can have three people on the horse at once. Vaulters perform moves to music. They might do handstands or jumps. They may even toss a teammate into the air.

There are seven set moves called compulsory exercises. One move is the flag.

In the flag, the vaulter hops to their knees. They hold one leg straight out behind them. Another move is called the mill. This move takes sixteen strides to finish.

Judges look at the skill of the people. They also score the horse. The horse's movement and behavior are very important. Vaulting can also help people with disabilities. It can help with balance and social skills.
