Even though he was very old and blind, he had a lot of energy. Some people believe he was already in his seventies when he became the doge. He came from a powerful family with many political connections. His father was a famous legal expert named Vitale Dandolo. Enrico spent many years working for his family and the city before he became the leader. He even traveled to Constantinople to help Venetian people living there.

As doge, Enrico made many big changes to help his city. In 1194, he changed how Venice used money. Before this, the silver coins were not very strong or steady. Enrico created three new types of silver coins to fix this. One was called the bianco, which was a half-penny. Another was the quartarolo, which was a quarter-penny. The most important was the silver grosso. This was a very pure silver coin. It became a very popular coin for trading across the Mediterranean Sea.

History shows that Enrico was a very clever politician. He spent years negotiating with the Byzantine Empire. He traveled to Constantinople several times to help his people. In 1184, he helped negotiate for the release of Venetians who were in prison. He also helped restore land to Venetian monasteries. These trips showed how much the people of Venice trusted him. Because of his hard work, he was elected doge in 1192. He was the second leader ever chosen by a council of forty electors.

One of the biggest events in his life was the Fourth Crusade. In 1202, a group of Crusaders arrived in Venice. They needed ships and supplies for a huge journey. Enrico made a deal to provide these things. However, the Crusaders could not pay the full amount of money they owed. They owed 85,000 marks, but they were still short by 34,000 marks. Enrico decided to lend the money to them. He asked that they pay him back using the spoils from their journey. This led the Crusaders to attack the city of Zara in 1202.

The Crusade eventually led the soldiers to Constantinople in 1204. During this time, the city was taken over. This event helped Venice build a large colonial empire. Enrico was given a special title called Despot for his role. He did not become the emperor himself, but he helped set up a new Latin Empire. Enrico Dandolo died in Constantinople in 1205. He was buried in the famous Hagia Sophia building. His life changed the history of Venice and the world forever.
