The Latin Empire was a short-lived state in the east. It was formed by leaders of the Fourth Crusade. These leaders took land from the Byzantine Empire. They wanted to create a new Roman Empire. This new empire would be led by Catholic rulers. The local people were Eastern Orthodox. This difference in faith was very important. The name "Latin" came from their use of the Latin language.

Creating this empire involved many steps and many people. The Fourth Crusade originally planned to go to Jerusalem. However, things changed due to money and politics. The crusaders reached the city of Constantinople instead. They captured the city in April 1204. After the city was taken, they divided the land. The Republic of Venice received three-eighths of the empire. This included the island of Crete.

History shows us how quickly things changed. Baldwin I of Flanders was elected the first emperor. He was crowned in the Hagia Sophia on May 16, 1204.

He tried to act like a true Roman ruler. But many people did not agree with him. At one time, five different groups all claimed to be the Roman Empire. These included the Latin Empire and the Holy Roman Empire. There were also three Byzantine remnant states.

Keeping control was a very hard job for the Latins. They faced many enemies in the surrounding lands. In the north, they fought a constant war with Bulgaria. At the Battle of Adrianople in 1205, Emperor Baldwin was captured. He died while being held in the Bulgarian capital of Tarnovo. In Asia Minor, the Empire of Nicaea was a strong rival. The Latins lost most of their land in Asia by 1235. The empire was also weakened by the power of Venice.

Eventually, the Latin Empire came to an end. The people from Nicaea grew strong enough to fight back. In 1261, they recovered the city of Constantinople. A leader named Michael VIII Palaiologos restored the Byzantine Empire. The last Latin emperor, Baldwin II, had to leave in exile. Even though the empire was gone, the title lived on. Some people still claimed the title for many years. It remains a famous part of history today.
