It is known for being very emotional. The songs often tell stories about love and loss. They also sing about hard times and being brave.

Singers use a unique style called kobushi. This is when a singer moves their voice between many notes on one word. It sounds different from a regular vibrato. Most enka singers wear beautiful clothes. Many women wear a kimono, which is a traditional Japanese robe. Men often wear formal suits or traditional dress.

Enka uses many different sounds. You might hear electric guitars and synthesizers. You can also hear old instruments like the shakuhachi flute or the shamisen.

The word enka has a long history. Long ago, it meant "speech song." It was used for political songs. Later, the name came back to describe this emotional style. Famous singers like Hibari Misora helped make enka very popular. Some songs, like "Onna no Michi," sold millions of copies. Enka helps people feel a sense of pride in Japanese culture.
