Energy demand management

technology Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Energy demand management is a way to balance how much power we use with how much is made. This is also called demand-side management. Sometimes, many people use electricity at the same time. This creates peak demand, which can stress the power grid.

To fix this, we can change how people use energy. We can teach them new habits or use money as an incentive. For example, electricity might cost less during off-peak times like nighttime. This helps move energy use away from busy hours.

There are many ways this works step by step. One way is through energy efficiency. This means using tools like better refrigerators that use less power for the same job. Another way is demand response. This involves shifting when we use power.

Some systems use smart technology to do this automatically. An integrated system can send signals to turn off certain machines when the grid is too busy. This helps keep the supply and demand close to a perfect balance.

People began focusing on this after the energy crises of 1973 and 1979. In the United States, the government passed the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act. This law helped reduce the need for foreign oil.

Later, the National Energy Conservation Policy Act of 1978 was passed. In the 1980s, the Electric Power Research Institute introduced these ideas to the public. These steps helped people realize they could manage their own energy use.

There are many interesting facts about these systems. Some tools use ripple control to switch devices on or off. This uses a high frequency signal on the power lines.

We also use distributed energy resources. These are small power tools, like solar panels, located close to where they are used. They usually produce 10 megawatts or less. In places like Australia, peak demand often happens between 4pm and 8pm. This is when many homes and businesses need the most power.

Modern technology makes these ideas easier to use every day. We now use smart grids to help manage wind and solar power. Since the sun and wind change, the grid must change too.

We can even use electric cars to help the grid. This is called vehicle-to-grid technology. It lets people sell their stored energy back to the system. These tools help us use cleaner energy and keep our lights on more reliably.
