Endogamy

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some groups choose to marry only people like them. This is called endogamy. People might marry within their own religion or ethnic group. They do this to keep their customs alive. It helps a small group stay the same for a long time.

Sometimes, a person can join a group by changing their beliefs. This is called conversion. Once they change, they can marry into the group. This helps the group stay together.

Being in a very small group can cause health issues. It can lead to certain sicknesses. For example, people on Tristan da Cunha live on a far island. They are almost an endogamic society. Research shows they have had asthma and glaucoma.

In some places, many people are related. This can happen if cousins marry often. This can make DNA matches look stronger than they really are. Some groups, like the Aari in Ethiopia, have done this for a very long time. They have practiced it for 4,500 years. This helps them stay a distinct community.
