Emperor penguin

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The emperor penguin is a truly remarkable bird. It is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species. These birds live in Antarctica, a place with extreme weather. They have a very distinct look with black feathers on their heads and backs. Their bellies are white, but they also have pale-yellow breasts and bright-yellow ear patches.

Because they live in the water, they cannot fly. Instead, they have wings that are stiff and flat like flippers. These flippers help them move easily through the ocean.

To survive in the deep sea, emperor penguins have amazing ways of working. They hunt for fish, squid, and tiny creatures called krill. When they dive, they can stay underwater for about 20 minutes. This is possible because they can slow their heart rate to just 15 or 20 beats per minute. They also shut down parts of their body that are not needed for diving. Their bones are solid rather than filled with air. This helps them handle the heavy pressure of the deep ocean.

Humans have been studying these birds for a long time. An English zoologist named George Robert Gray described them in 1844. He gave them a name that means "without-wings-diver." The specific name honors a naturalist named Johann Reinhold Forster. Forster may have been among the first to see them around 1773 or 1774. Scientists believe this group of penguins split from other penguins about 40 million years ago.

Life in Antarctica is very hard for these birds. The air can be as cold as -60 degrees Celsius. To stay warm, they have thick feathers and a layer of fat under their skin. The males have a very big job during the winter. They protect a single egg for over two months while the female goes to the sea to eat. During this time, a male can lose about 45 percent of his body weight.

Most adults live for about 20 years in the wild.

Emperor penguins are very social animals that live in large groups. They travel over the ice to reach breeding colonies. These colonies can hold several thousand birds at once. Because they do not have a permanent home, they must use sound to find each other. They use a wide variety of unique calls to recognize their mates and their chicks.

This helps them stay connected in a huge, crowded group. It is a clever way to stay a family in the freezing cold.
