Emmett Kelly was a famous American circus performer. He was also a gifted artist who loved to draw.

He created a very special clown named Weary Willie. This character was based on the hoboes of the Great Depression. During the 1930s, many people were very poor and lived on the streets. Kelly turned this difficult reality into a silent character that people loved. Willie did not speak any words at all. Instead, he used his body and a broom to tell stories. This helped people feel a connection to him through his actions.

His famous routine was very clever and fun to watch. It often started with him sweeping the circus ring. A bright spotlight would follow him around the floor. Willie would slap, sweep, and chase the light with his broom. After that, he would blow up a balloon until it popped. He would then act out his sadness by burying the balloon bits in the sawdust. This simple way of acting made him a star. He even performed this act in London at the Olympia.

Emmett Kelly had a very busy life before he became a famous clown. He was born in Sedan, Kansas, on December 9, 1898. His father worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. As a young man, Kelly studied cartooning at the Landon School. He even worked as a trapeze artist in the circus. He performed high in the air with his wife, Eva. They even had two sons named Emmett Jr. and Patrick.

In 1944, a very serious fire happened at a circus in Hartford, Connecticut. The big top tent caught fire, and many people were hurt.

Emmett was brave and tried to help the crowd get out safely. He used a bucket of water to try to put out a small fire. A famous photo from a magazine shows him in his full clown makeup while carrying the bucket. This photo became very well known around the world. It showed his courage during a very hard time.

Later in his life, Kelly moved to Hollywood to try acting in movies. He was 51 years old when he signed a contract to work in films. He was very careful to protect his character, Weary Willie. One studio wanted him to play a villain who was a criminal. Kelly said no because he did not want to turn his beloved character into a murderer. He wanted Willie to remain a character people could love. He spent his life bringing joy to audiences through his unique art.
