Emmett Kelly was a famous circus performer. He was also a gifted artist. He started by drawing cartoons. Later, he worked as a trapeze artist. He performed high in the air with his wife, Eva.

Emmett created a special clown named Weary Willie. This character was based on poor men from the 1930s. Willie was a silent clown. He never spoke a word. Instead, he used a broom to act. He would chase a bright spotlight around the ring. He also blew up a balloon until it popped.

In 1944, a large fire happened at a circus in Hartford. Emmett was brave during the event. He used a bucket of water to help. A famous photo shows him in his clown makeup. He was carrying the water bucket to help others.

Emmett later moved to Hollywood. He wanted to act in movies. He loved his clown character very much. He would not play a character that was a criminal. He spent his life bringing joy to people through his art.
