Emerging technologies

technology Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Emerging technologies are new tools that can change our world. Some are brand new, while others use old ideas in fresh ways. These technologies often grow very fast and have a big impact. They can change the status quo, which means the way things usually are. We also see something called convergence. This happens when different systems, like voice and video, join together. When they share resources, they can work much more efficiently.

New tools can work in two different ways. Some are incremental, which means they are small, steady steps forward. For example, the DVD was a gradual step after the compact disc. Other tools are disruptive. These are tools that replace an old way entirely. A good example is how cars replaced horse-drawn carriages. This made the old way of traveling unnecessary.

Many people have studied how these tools change history. Computer scientist Bill Joy has written about these powerful technologies. He worries that they could be used by a small group of people. He says they might help everyone or cause great harm. Other thinkers, like Alexander Bard and Jan Söderqvist, have different views. They believe technology is the main thing that changes our world. They say humans stay mostly the same, but technology is always moving.

There are many specific examples of these tools today. Artificial intelligence, or AI, is the study of making intelligent machines. John McCarthy coined this term in 1956. Another example is 3D printing, which is also called additive manufacturing. In 2013, this technology caused a controversy regarding 3D printed firearms. We also see robotics, which is the design and building of robots. A social robot named Sophia was activated on April 19, 2015.

Some technologies focus on helping the human body. Gene therapy can treat certain diseases. Between 1990 and 2014, there were about 2,000 gene therapy trials. There are also cancer vaccines used to treat or prevent cancer. For instance, the FDA approved a vaccine called Provenge in 2010. Scientists are even working on cultured meat in laboratories. A Dutch team even ate the first in vitro beefburger in London in August 2013. These tools offer hope, but they also lead to many debates.
