This means the story starts at the end and moves backward. The play was a huge hit in New York. It even traveled to many different countries like Japan and France. Rice earned $100,000 from this first big work.

Rice wrote many different kinds of plays. In 1923, he wrote a strange play called The Adding Machine. He wrote this story in only 17 days. It was a satire about how machines change our lives. His most famous play was Street Scene, written in 1929. This play showed the real lives of people in city slums. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which is a very big honor.
