One famous woman who worked there was Sally Salisbury.

Needham was not always kind. She was very hard on the women who worked for her. She made them pay high prices for dresses. If they could not pay, she sent them to prison. She often found new workers from the countryside. She was often friendly to them at first. Then she showed her mean side once they moved in.

In 1731, a man named Sir John Gonson led raids on such houses. He wanted to change how people lived. He arrested Needham. A court said she must stand in the pillory. A pillory was a wooden frame used for punishment. People threw things at her while she stood there. The attack was very bad. Needham died a few days later. She was very afraid of the punishment.
