Elena Ferrante is a famous Italian novelist who uses a secret name. This secret name is called a pseudonym. She has kept her true identity hidden since her first book came out in 1992. Ferrante believes that books do not need their authors to exist once they are written. Staying anonymous helps her focus on her writing process. She once said that being secret helps her release her words into the world.

Ferrante writes many different kinds of stories. Her first novel, Troubling Love, was published in 1992 and won a prize called the Premio Procida-Isola di Arturo Elsa Morante. In 2002, she wrote The Days of Abandonment, which tells a story about a woman named Olga. She also wrote The Lost Daughter, which was later made into a film by Maggie Gyllenhaal. She even wrote a children's book in 2007 called The Beach at Night. Her books are translated into many different languages for readers everywhere.

Her most famous works are called the Neapolitan Novels. This is a set of four books published between 2011 and 2015. The books follow two smart girls, Lila and Lenu, who are born in Naples in 1944. The series includes My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child. These books follow the girls for over sixty years. Many people call this series a new classic.

Because no one knows who she is, many people have made guesses. Some people think she is a translator named Anita Raja. In 2016, a reporter named Claudio Gatti used financial records to suggest this theory. Other experts, like a team from the University of Padua, used computers to study her writing. They thought her husband, Domenico Starnone, might be the real writer. Both Anita Raja and her publisher have denied these claims.

Even with all the mystery, Ferrante's work is very important. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in 2016. Her book My Brilliant Friend was even ranked as the number one book of the 21st century by The New York Times. Many famous writers, like Zadie Smith, are fans of her work. People love her stories because they describe real feelings very well. Her books show how lives change during big moments in history.
