Electrical engineering is a special way of studying and using electricity.

It focuses on designing equipment and systems that use electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism. This field is huge and covers many different jobs. Some engineers work on computers or telecommunications. Others work on power engineering or how light works through optics.

They might even study tiny things using nanotechnology. Because it is so broad, engineers often work with other types of science too. They might use computer science to help machines learn new things.

To understand how it works, we can look at how power moves.

Engineers design circuits to guide electricity through specific paths. They use tools like a voltmeter to measure the flow. They also use complex software to design new parts. Some engineers work with alternating current, which is a type of electricity that can travel very long distances. This is often done using transformers.

By controlling how electricity moves, they can power everything from a tiny phone to a giant city.

History shows us how this science began.

Long ago, William Gilbert was a famous scientist. He was the first to use the word "electricity." He even made a device called a versorium to find static electricity. Later, in 1800, Alessandro Volta made the voltaic pile. This was an early version of the batteries we use today.

These early discoveries helped scientists understand how to store and use power.

The 1800s were a very busy time for discovery.

In 1820, Hans Christian Ørsted found that electricity can move a compass needle. This showed that electricity and magnetism are linked. In 1831, Michael Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction. This helped people build electric motors. Later, in 1873, James Clerk Maxwell wrote a famous theory about electricity and magnetism. In 1882, Thomas Edison turned on a large power network in New York City. This network provided 110 volts of direct current to 59 customers.

Today, electrical engineering links to almost everything you see.

When you use a computer, you are using work done by engineers. When you watch television, you are using technology that started with the cathode-ray tube. Even microwave ovens exist because of an invention called the magnetron.

Modern engineers also work on satellite communication and renewable energy. They help build the systems that keep our world connected and powered every single day.
