Long ago, people studied how electricity works. William Gilbert was an early scientist. He used the word "electricity" for the first time. Later, Alessandro Volta made a voltaic pile. This was a type of early battery.

In the 1800s, many new things were found. Hans Christian Ørsted saw that electricity can make magnets. Michael Faraday found ways to use magnets to make power. These ideas helped make electric motors.

Engineers also found ways to send messages. They used the telegraph to send signals through wires. Guglielmo Marconi worked on radio.

He sent wireless signals through the air. This helped people talk over long distances.

In 1947, scientists made the first transistor.
