She brought energy and enthusiasm to every stage and screen she touched.

Eleanor learned to dance in a very unique way. She first studied classical ballet and acrobatics to help with her shyness. When she moved to New York City, she had to learn tap dance. Her teachers, Jack Donahue and Johnny Boyle, used a special method. They made her wear an army surplus belt with sandbags on each side. This extra weight helped her feel the floor like a musical instrument. It helped her develop a smooth and grounded style of dancing.

Her career began with small jobs in Atlantic City, New Jersey. At age 12, she performed acrobatic acts during her summer holidays. She was later influenced by great dancers like John "Bubbles" Sublett. Sublett was known as the "Father of Rhythm Tap" because he used his heels. Eleanor also worked with the famous Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. He taught her his signature Stair Dance during private shows in New York. These early years helped her become a master of many different styles.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Eleanor starred in many famous movies. Some of her best films include Born to Dance and Broadway Melody of 1938. She also starred in Rosalie and the musical Honolulu. One of her most famous moments was dancing with Fred Astaire. They performed a tap sequence in Broadway Melody of 1940. Many people believe this is one of the greatest tap dances in film history. Even Fred Astaire was impressed by her incredible skill and strength.

After her movie career, Eleanor stayed busy in other ways. She hosted a Christian children's television show during the 1950s. She also performed in successful nightclub acts in Las Vegas. She even appeared in the film Duchess of Idaho in 1950. Eleanor retired from the spotlight to raise her son, Peter Ford. She passed away from cancer at the age of 69. Her legacy lives on through the many people she inspired to dance.
