Edwin Thumboo is a famous poet and teacher from Singapore. He is known as a pioneer of English literature in his country. This means he helped build a new way for people to write in English. His poems often use history and myths to tell stories. A myth is an old story about gods or heroes. These stories help people in a multicultural society find common ground. Many people call him Singapore's unofficial poet laureate because his work celebrates his nation.

Thumboo began writing poetry when he was seventeen years old. He studied at Victoria School and was encouraged by his teacher, Shamus Frazer. He later went to the University of Malaya to study English and history. In 1956, he published his first collection of poems called Rib of Earth. This book was dedicated to his teacher. Later, he wrote famous books like Ulysses by the Merlion in 1979. He also wrote poetry for children in a book called Child's Delight. His work often looks at how a country grows and changes.

His life has been full of hard work and learning. He was born on 22 November 1933 in a colonial Singapore. His father was a Tamil Indian teacher and his mother was Chinese. As a child, he sometimes faced hard times because of his mixed background. During the Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945, he helped his family by selling cakes and tending goats. He even worked as a salesboy to help out. These early years helped him grow a strong sense of self-respect and determination.

Thumboo spent much of his life at the National University of Singapore. He joined the University of Singapore in 1966 after the country became independent. He earned his Ph.D. in 1970 after researching African poetry. He became a full professor and led the English department for many years. From 1980 to 1991, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He was the longest-serving dean in the history of that faculty. Even after he retired from full-time teaching, he remained an emeritus professor.

His writing has changed the way people think about literature in Singapore. He helped create the first National Poetry Festival in 2015. He also worked to help young people learn about the arts. Thumboo has won many important awards for his skill. He received the Cultural Medallion for Literature in 1979. He also won the National Book Development Council of Singapore Book Awards three times. His poems, like the one about the Merlion statue, have inspired many other writers to find their own voices.
