He was known for many things during his life. He wrote books about history, mysteries, and even science fiction. He was also very good at making up clever phrases. People still remember lines like "the pen is mightier than the sword." Some people even started a contest to find the worst book openings. They used his famous line, "It was a dark and stormy night," as a way to judge them.

Bulwer-Lytton had a very active career in the government. He served in Parliament for many years starting in 1831. He was a member of the Whig party first. Later, he joined the Conservative party. In 1858, he became the Secretary of State for the Colonies. This was a very important job in the British government. He worked alongside his friend, Benjamin Disraeli.

His work in the government helped change parts of the world. While he was in charge of the colonies, he helped start British Columbia. He wanted the new colony to have the best British culture. He chose Richard Clement Moody to lead a group of engineers there. He wanted these men to be polite and well-educated. Because of his help, a place called Lytton in British Columbia was named after him.

Bulwer-Lytton's personal life was often quite difficult. He married a woman named Rosina Doyle Wheeler in 1827. Their marriage was not a happy one and they eventually separated. His mother also passed away in 1843, which made him feel very sad. He had to change his last name to Bulwer-Lytton in 1844. He did this to follow his mother's will. He even kept her room at Knebworth House exactly the same.

He spent his later years dealing with health problems. He had a disease in his ear that caused him a lot of pain. He moved to Torquay to try to feel better. Sadly, he died in January 1873, just before his 70th birthday. Even though he had a hard life, he was very successful. He was even buried in Westminster Abbey. This is a very special place for important people in England.
