Dijkstra taught many students. He worked at a school in Eindhoven. He also worked at the University of Texas at Austin.

His writing style was unique because he often avoided using traditional bibliographies. He preferred to maintain self-reliance in his scientific reasoning. This dedication to independent thought characterized much of his professional life.
His contributions earned him some of the highest honors in the scientific community. In 1972, he received the ACM Turing Award for his fundamental work in developing structured programming languages. He also received the ACM PODC Influential Paper Award for his research on the self-stabilization of program computation. This award was renamed the Dijkstra Prize the following year to honor his legacy. These honors recognized his ability to turn complex mathematical concepts into practical computing principles. His work provided the theoretical backbone for how modern software is organized.
Dijkstra was also famous for his highly unconventional personality and teaching methods. He was known as a "character" in the computing world. In the classroom, he avoided modern tools like overhead projectors. Instead, he preferred writing mathematical proofs in chalk on a blackboard. 
Even his use of technology was surprisingly traditional. For many decades, Dijkstra avoided using computers for his own scientific work. He did not use word processors to write his many articles. Instead, he relied on a typewriter and his favorite Montblanc Meisterstück fountain pen. He believed that a thinker should be able to compose an idea fully in their mind before writing it down. He felt that significant editing or rewriting was unnecessary if the initial thought was clear. This disciplined approach to mental clarity was a hallmark of his entire life. Dijkstra passed away on 6 August 2002, following a long struggle with cancer.
