He presented arguments regarding the physical limitations of computer performance. He theorized how special features or modes in new machines would be governed by these limits. This resulted in his two major and lesser "laws" regarding sequential versus parallel processing. These theories explain that the speed of a task is limited by the part that cannot be parallelized. This concept remains vital for engineers designing supercomputers today.
Amdahl remained an active entrepreneur throughout his later years. He founded Trilogy Systems in 1979 to design wafer-scale microprocessors. Although that specific project failed, he continued to launch new ventures. He founded Andor International in 1987 to create smaller, more efficient machines. In 1996, he co-founded Commercial Data Servers. This company developed machines with super-cooled processor designs, such as the ESP/490. His career was defined by a constant drive to push the boundaries of what hardware could achieve.
Gene Amdahl received many prestigious honors for his contributions to science. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1967. In 1983, he received the Harry H. Goode Memorial Award from the IEEE Computer Society. He was also named a Fellow of the Computer History Museum in 1998. Amdahl passed away on November 10, 2015, at the age of 92. He died from pneumonia in Palo Alto, California. His legacy continues through the laws of computing that still guide engineers every day.
