Ted Codd was a famous computer scientist. He was born in England in 1923. He studied math and chemistry at Oxford. During a war, he served as a pilot. Later, he moved to New York to work for IBM.

Ted changed how computers store information. He invented the relational model. This is a way to organize data in tables. His work helped create relational databases. These systems are used by many computers today.

IBM was slow to use his new ideas. They wanted to keep using older ways. Ted showed customers why his way was better. This pressure helped IBM change. A new language called SEQUEL was made. It was later renamed SQL. This language is very important now.

Ted won the Turing Award in 1981. This is a top prize for computer science. He also made the Boyce–Codd normal form. This is a set of rules for data. One group named an award after him. It is the Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award.
