Early modern literature

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Long ago, new ways of telling stories began. In Europe, people started writing novels. A novel is a long story in a book. Miguel de Cervantes wrote one called Don Quixote. It was a funny story that poked fun at old legends. Printing machines helped make many copies of books. This meant more people could read them.

Actors also changed how they performed. In Italy, performers did improv. Improv is acting without a set script. They acted in the streets for crowds. In England, William Shakespeare wrote famous plays. At that time, men played all the parts. This included the female roles too.

In other lands, writing was also changing. In the Ottoman Empire, poetry was very popular. Poets used special symbols and rhymes. In Persia, poets wrote beautiful love poems. In Japan, the Edo period brought new drama. This drama later became kabuki. People also wrote travel diaries and funny tales. Many people learned to read during this time.
